About Denville Hockey

The Denville PAL Hockey Association represents the town’s recreational hockey program. We are proudly sponsored by Denville Police Athletic League and many community sponsors. The objective of the Association is to develop, promote, and support the game of hockey for youths 17 years of age and under in the Township of Denville, NJ and to instill a sense of fairness and
self- discipline. Denville Ice Hockey was founded in 1971.

Participation is Denville PAL Hockey is open to residents of Denville as well as residents of neighboring towns that do not have a recreational hockey program of their own.

LEAGUE AFFILIATION

The Denville Blue Knights participates in the Morris County Youth Hockey League (MCYHL) in all five age divisions. The age levels for the 2017-18 season are as follows:

Division Age Range Description Cost
Mite Ages 8 and under Born in year 2009 or later $850
Squirt Ages 9 and 10 Born in year 2008 and 2007 $980
PeeWee Ages 11 and 12 Born in year 2006 and 2005 $980
Bantam Ages 13 and 14 Born in year 2004 and 2003 $980
Midget High School Born between 2002 and 1999 $495

Notes:

– The Age Range listed is based on USA Hockey Guidelines.  It reflects the player’s age on January 1 of the hockey season. In the 2017-2018 season, the age is based on the player’s age on January 1, 2018.

– As the league has shifted to the half-ice model for the Mite age-group, which favors agility and situational-awareness over speed and power, we have found that our younger players (6 and under) are able to participate and benefit from playing in league games. We have therefore discontinued the practice-only “Termites” program for the season.

A personalized Denville Blue Knights jersey and socks can be purchased for $100. The purchase can be made at the time of player registration.

At times, the Denville Blue Knights may participate in seasonal or weekend tournaments that are not affiliated with MCYHL. Participation in these tournaments, as well as payment for such participation, is optional and is not included in the team fees.

MITES

Schedule

September – early March

Practices

26 weekly one-hour practices are held Mondays at Aspen Ice Arena in Randolph. Additional practice ice times are sometimes added as they become available. Practice ice is shared with the Squirts (9-10 year-olds). Typically, warm-up drills are done together and then the teams split up for age-appropriate activities.

Games

18 games (one-hour ice slot), typically on weekends at Mennen Arena (possibly some at Beacon Hill Club in Summit), followed by a year-end “Jamboree” tournament.

Games are half-ice, 4-on-4 (plus goalies) in accordance with the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM).  ADM uses a smaller ice surface, encouraging the smaller and younger players to stay actively involved in the game at all times, never permitting them to be “spectators” as action unfolds at the opposite end of a larger rink. Opposing teams play two games, simultaneously, on each half of the ice (separated by temporary dasher boards), thus maximizing the players’ ice-time.
